Ous calograms yesterday announced the death of Gabriel Claude Jules Favre, a renowned French Statesman, an orator. The deceased gentleman was^the son of a Lyons merchant, and was born in 1809. He passed for the bar at tbe age of 21, and by his talents soon made a name for himself throughout the south of France. His political opinions were intensely republican, and the boldness of his sentiments not unfrequently placed the Stale solicitors and judges in an embarassing position, and on several occasions in the early portion of his career he endangered hjs own life by his petulant advocacy of political prisoners. In 1834 he became a member of the Paris bar. His first office under the State was that of Home Secretary, which he accepted after the revolution of 1818, when he attained considerable notoriety for his pamphlet impeaching the Ledru-Bollin administration. He was a bitter opponent of Louis Napoleon, and after the coup d'etat he refused to take the oath of fidelity to the Imperial Government. This closed his political career for some time, and we next hear of him as a member of the Legislature in 1858. On tbe downfall of the Empire in 1870 Favre became Minister of War, but resigned in 1871. The death of this distinguished statesman and orator will cause a blank ia the ranks of French politicians not easily repaired.
