The Borough Council at its last meeting resolved to carry out the agreement, a very beneficial one for the Borough, entered into by the late Mayor with the Government and the Thames County Council, whereby the Borough secured without cost the entire rights of the County in the Domestic Water Supply, and the use of water from the larger race whenever it was required to supplement the smaller supply. The Council are to be commended for their determination, and should at once take steps to raise sufficient money to extend the supply, and lay down the 9-irich mains to Shortland. Besides the ordinary revenue of the Borough the property of the Domestic Water Supply can now be offered as security for a substantial loan, and a sum sufficient, say £20,000, should be raised to carry out the requirements of the water supply, and to enable the Council to construct permanent asphalt or stone drainage works. The matter of drainage cannot be put off much longer, for the cost alone of keeping the drains clear of rubbish and weeds entails a serious charge upon ihe funds. With properly constructed main drains a great part of this expense could be saved.
