THE DISTRESS IN IRELAND.
(To tbe Editor of the Evening Stab.)
Sik, —T was ' very much pleased to sec in the columns of your journal the other night, a paragraph urging on the people of this district the inauguration of a fund for the relief of the distress in Ireland. The idea is well worthy the consideration of the benevolently . inclined, who so willingly subscribed for the relief of the Indian Famine sufferers, and other deserving objects; indeed, I think our fellow-countrymen have stronger claims for our assistance than foreigners. I hope a practical effort will be made in this district in the direction indicated, as I see that other towns are taking up the question warmly. I would suggest that the Mayor should call a meeting, and I have no doubt but that our townsmen will contribute liberally.—l am, &c , Flaviits.
