Kews from Whangaroa states that a | very large number of logs were washed down by the recent floods in the rivers and the mills are active. » ! The calling of fresh tenders for the j railway station,reclamation are delayed pending authority from the Minister of Works. The Native Land Court at Te Waotu has been adjourned. The natives claim that Government should remove the liens off the lauds on which fire thousand pounds was advanced and allow them to sell to private purchasers, the five thousand being refunded to the Government. The proposed railway runs through part of the land. Major Mair has telegraphed to the Hon. Mr Bryce for instructions. The Euakaka Block, Te Aroha, which Mr Hesketh was appointed Royal Commissioner to investigate, contains about 900 acres. The claimants are J. Burt, Auckland, and S. Stephenson, Thames. The block is suitable for a township. The Star reporter interviewed General Bartlett, from iSamoa, who gave a full statement of Samoan affairs. He said i the American Consul possesses no diplomatic power from Washington, therefore the convention signed by him is void. He does not believe that Germany has any design for annexing Samoa, or will spend one cent on it. Yesterday, j Business is gradually recovering, and animation characterises the market. The annual meeting of the Auckland District National Independent Order of Oddfellows was held in the Chambers Albert street, when the following brethren were elected officers for the forthcoming year, viz :—Bro. Craig delivered the first of a [ series of lectures ou political reform, to be ! given by various gentlemen under the auspices of the Working Men's Political Association. Mr Thwaites, President of the Association, presided. The subject of the lecture was, " The English Kelorm Bill and how it was carried."
