London, January 9. Lord Derby on Protection. Considers it no Remedy for Depression of Trade. Earl Derby, speaking at Huddersfield to-day, referred to the agitation in favor of protection as a remedy for the distress and depression of trade in England. There are rumors of the massing of Russian troops on German frontier, which are attracting a good deal of public attention in England and Europe. The Union Bank has declared a dividend of sixteen per cent, for the year. • The Tay Disaster. Fourteen bodies have been recovered from the river Tay, the scene of the recent disaster. , The Irish Famine. The Irish Government has decided to advance £250,000 of church surplus for carrying out works for relief.
