South Ward Election.

The polling for the election of a gentleman to fill the vacancy in the representation of the South Ward commenced this morning at 9 o'clock, the polling booth being the Oddfejlows Hall, Shortland. Mr Davies, the Returning Officer, was in attendance, and Mr J. Skene officiated as his deputy. Each candidate had cabs for the convenience of the ratepayers, elaborately decorated with posters in favor of the respective candidates. . The polling excited little interest during the forenoon, but as the afternoon wore on the interest seemed to be greater. Mr Leydon as usual was most energetic in his canvass, and appealed to the rate-, payers with forcible arguments why they should give him their support.. The poll will close at 6 p.m., and the result should be known half an hour later.
