The trip across the Gulf was : very pleasant, and at the other side, horse races and other sports were provided for the amusement of the visitors. . , taeaeu. A great number of ladies and children visited the gardens yesterday afternoon. Sports. were provide!, bat the horse racing did not excite much interest. The 1 fact became apparent that the races w«fe got up more for the benefit of a few owners of horses than for the general public, so that little attention was paid them. The Vivid, chartered by the members of the Shortland Fire Brigade; left Shortland on an excursion to the Puke, with the Superintendent, E. W*. Hollis," Esq., officers and members of the Brigade, with their wives and families/ and a. number of invited friends. After a very pleasant day spent on the river and in the green fields at the Pukfe the little steamer returned, and landed her passengers,at an early hour.
