A few minutes before 12 o'clock on WediAday night, the Grahamstow n Fire Brigade mustered in full force and pro* ceeded to the Pacific corner, where, tuounffed upon their engine, they Ban? a J»iejji|#S!'song. The whistle to turnwi th#wjier was obeyed sharply—in fact so quickly was it done that a large number of the Bystanders, had scarcely time to get under corer before the spray from the ! jets of waterwas upon tbem. Frqpp the verandah of^ the > Exchange MJjdured fires _wejre burnt, irhich j^ve liar and pleasing " "appearance to the I water, the spray; at times appearing' 1 like rainbows. The jets were ho arranged I I that a Prince of Wales; feather apfltjgtfl, j and again othar designs were fordHp'of 1 the columtfi of water, which reached far above the edjoining ' buildings. The f bands placed during the exhibition,, and 1 altogethtAhe effect was very fine. The men worßd well, and every order was carried out promptly and with alacrity, reflecting credit upon the Brigade, and SUing forth, approving comments from c lookers on. Several timti during the display cheers' were given. The bands paraded' the .streets for hours, playing favorite tunes'; and, the night beint fine, great numbers of people were^but, ■ wishing their friends and neighbour* the compliment! of the season. , Some, remembering old country customs, armed themselves with bottles of strong) waten and proceeded unceremoniously to wake up their friends, and insist upon them drinking a tot' in honor of the new y*|r, and with such ceremonies wad 1880 weHomed On the Thames. i
