Thu day. Later Fiji News. The cutter Eose, arrived at Levulra from an extended cruise in the Islands reports visiting Bampton Island, an island noted as containing considerable deposit of guano, situated near New Britain. The Eose proceeded under charter by a German gentleman, but on arrival it was found,to contain a French official resident, who had taken possession of the island in the name of the French Government. He had been left there by. a French man-of-war, some few months previously.
The Hose here took on board the shipwrecked crew of the Sydney whaling schooner Venture, consisting of 29 hands, the vessel having come to grief on a reef surrounding the island some time prievously. The Bose then proceeded to New Britain and New Zealand (?>. She reports the state of affairs at the former place dangerous to traders, who consist of about a score of mostly Germans, trading for Godeffroy. All take the precaution to carry arms.
At Duke of York Island the natives are quiet and inoffensive from where the missionary influence radiates. The wife and family of the Rev. G. Brown are all in good health, and the mission is proipering.
