WELLINGTON.
Last night. A Fatal Accident A fearful accident occurred on th» tramway to-day. A young ma*; named James Hobinson, a cadet employed in the Telegraph Department, was killed instantaneously. It appears the deceased was riding on the first carriage, and on attempting to get oil was thrown under the wheels. His body was fearfully mangled, one leg and arm being broken, and portions of his chest, besides several ! parts of the head, being completely smashed. Immediately the accident was observed, the tram stopped, and medical assistance was procured, but it was of no avail, lite being extinct. Bobinson was 19 years of age, and universally respected. His parents reside in Dunedin. The accident has caused quite a gloom over the town. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
Colonel Header has been appointed Commissioner of the Armed Constabulary for the whole colony.
