Last night. Upon the Property Bill.

At the meeting tonight of the owners of machinery*to consider the proposed tax on machinery and stock-in-trade, the following resolutions were carried:— "That; in the opinion of this meeting, the proposed imposition of a property taxon machinery and stock-in-trade would be highly injurious to the interests of trade and commerce in every department, and being a tax on industry would operate as a barrier to the healthy detelopraent of industries of the colony;" and further, "That this"meeting believes the greatest injustice would be done to the holders of stock, as the tax would be liable to bo re-imposed every time stock, changed hands from'the wholesale holders to the retail consumers."

The widow of the lale Arehdencon Willia,ms"is dead ; aged 85. Inspector Thompson has telegraphed to the Northern, police to look out for a missing boat frpm New Caledonia, containing escaped convicts. At the annual meeting of the City Council, the report shewed that during the year £10,000 had been added to the rate ralue of the City property through new buildings, and the lease rental of the endowments hid increased £2000 a year. The Mayor (Mr Peacock), on his resumption of office, entertained the Council and a number of citizens at a public luncheon.
