A four-roomed cottage at Caversham was burnt down last night. MrPickfoot, the owner, was out at the time; The building is insured for £150 in the South British, and the furniture for £100 in the Colonial.
Five hundred and eighty-three persons arrived, and one huudred and ninety •six' left, Port Chalmers last month.

Messrs Whytelaw and Co. offered a cargo of new season sugar from Mauritius ex Emily, on account of Dalgetty and Co. The whole cargo sold as follows:—-Fine yellow, £33; finest yellow, £36 10s; brewer's crystals, £34 10s to £37 5s ; fine grey, £36 5s to £37.12s 6d; finest white, £37 17s 6d to £38 2s 6d; snowdrops, £38,7s 6d to £3810s.
