THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M Resurrexi. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1879.

We publish iv another column a letter Bi'gned " Sentinel" upon the Property Assessment Bill, and iv order to give further information on tho operation of the proposed measure, we publish Mr Robert Stout's opinions as contained in a letter to the Ota«o Times. It mifjht be well if some of our leading citizens were to call a public meeting to discuss the provisions of the measure, and possibly to make representations !o the Government with a view of having alterations introduced. As the Bill is at present before the House, and with the majority at the disposal of the Government, may be passed at any sitting, and if any representations are to be made upon the subject, no time should be lost. Without doubt the measure is oppressive and exceedingly inquisitorial, which will only be fully realised when its provisions nre in operation, and when it will be altogether too. late to object to it.

There was a clean sheet at the R.M. Court this morning. ' We understand that the Alburnia dividend is 17s 6d per share, payable on Friday next. Thebe was a rumor pre Talent in town to-day that a child had died by poison at Tararu. On making enquiries it was found that a boy aged five years, a son of Mr James Campbell, residing near the Governor Ferguson Hotel, had died after a few days' illness. It appears that tho child had eaten some mussels on Thursday, and had since (hen been taken ill, the parents ascribing his indisposition to the mussels. On Dr Payne being called in ho at once pronounced the cause of death to be scarlet fever. Another of Campbell's children is also very ill of the same complaint. The quarterly licensing meeting for the districts of Thames and Hauraki was held today. The only business was an application by A. W. Sawyer for a license for Use old British Empire Hotel. This was refused on the grounds that it was not required in that locality, and the aceomodation wns not sufficient. The bench expressed its determination to grant no fresh' licenses, unless, very supperior accomodation be provided. The application of E, Kelly of Hikutaia for the transfer of his license to new premises was granted.
