Brookes led with 7.5 miles, Henderson and Scott 70 each, Drummond 68. Sunday night. There was a narrow escape, from a serious sccident on the railway near Purakauui on Saturday night. The 5.15 special train from Duuediu to Palmerston was thrown off the line owing to the engine running into a land slip which had covered the rails. Fortunately the train was not going fast, or it would have .stood a chance of going over a cliff. Considerable delay was caused, Iv the walking match, Scott did 106 miles. The races which were to have been held on Saturday were postponed on account of the rain till Monday. The weather is now beautifully fine.
