Saturday night. In consequence of the inclement state of the,weather the races hare bceu post* poncd till Monday. The great 24 hours' walking match is causing intense excitement. Up to 12.30 p m. Brookes led with 7.5 miles, Henderson and Scott 70 each, Drummond 68. At the 70th mile Brookes was disqualified for unfair watkiug. .1500 people attended the scene of tho contest during tho niorniiig,

Sunday night. There was a narrow escape, from a serious sccident on the railway near Purakauui on Saturday night. The 5.15 special train from Duuediu to Palmerston was thrown off the line owing to the engine running into a land slip which had covered the rails. Fortunately the train was not going fast, or it would have .stood a chance of going over a cliff. Considerable delay was caused, Iv the walking match, Scott did 106 miles. The races which were to have been held on Saturday were postponed on account of the rain till Monday. The weather is now beautifully fine.
