TIMARU.
Last night. Tho sea is rising, and the vessels in the roadstead arc labouring heavily. Should bad weather increase, the John Watson will be in a very precarious position, as she lies within half a mile of the breakwater. The other vessels in harbor arc the Aberdeen barque, Saxon schooner, and the Beautiful Star steamer.
A colored man named Chas. Evans, a resident of Timaru for 17 years, died in the Hospital this morning from natural causes accelerated by drink. The deceased was besl: known as " Black Charlie," and was a native of St. Johu's, New Brunswick.
The Christchurch new mission lodge is to be called the Conyer's.
The extent of Crown land for future disposal in Canterbury is reduced to fire million Iwo hundred and fifty-three thousand sis hundred and twelve acres, one rood and thirty-ono perches. After a lonp discussion at yesterday's sitting of the Synod, on the motion of Archdeacon Harper, a resolution was submitted to the general Synod for the approval of a special burial service for un baptised infants, suicides, and ex-com-municants.
On Nov. 11 the railway telegraph lino on the Malvcrn branch was struck by lightning. Ten of the poles were splintered, and some badly shattered. Three railway sleepers were split, and some of the wires parted and fused. At the Darfield junction the officers at work saw a bright light leap from one instrument to the floor, followed by a noise as of the report of a light fowling-piece. No damage was done to the instrument. The office is fitted with lightning guards of a very effective pattern.
