Last night

On Tuesday a man named Fred Hugh met with a serious accident, at the Weka Pass railway work. A largo quantity of earth fell upon him, breaking his left leg and injuring the other seriously. One of his arms was also much bruised, and the sufferer wa3 brought to the hospital yesterdiiy. Skeimentz, for whom Tyrell the actor was arrested by mistake, was captured at the .Kolleston Hotel yesterday. Ho was disguised, and had dyed his hair and eyebrows.

For the annual examination in connection with the New Zealand University, sixty candidates have sent in their names to the Registrar for examination for degrees of honor, for senior scholarships, and for the B.A. degree. Thirty-eight candidates arc to be cxatnin d in section one, and thirteen in section two. Of these fifty-one candidates, ten are school teachers, and forty are uudor-graduaies in the University.

At the adjourned inquest on John Shilling, who died at Doyleston on Novein ber 6th, the analyst who tiniilysed the cuntents of the stomach found a quantity of arsensic therein, enough to hill a dozen men. A verdict of committed suicide was returned.

At a meeting of tobacconists held last night, it was unanimously re?olvcd to raise the retail price of tobaoco and cigars to meet tho extra duty imposed by the tariff*.
