OUR LIBERAL GOVERNMENT.

(To the Editor of the Evaning Star). Sik,—l see it 13 proposed to reimpose the taxes remitted last session. I wish to ask our local members of what use are they; were, they jiot elected for the purpose of seeing thotjust arid equitable laws were passed, that taxes should not be placed on those least able to bear them P' Of' what use is local; selfgovernment if the General Government can tax 'anything they like;"without regard as to whethei 1 the people can pay these taxes, or not. It seems monstrous to me that under our local self-government scheme such a waste of public time and money can take place. One session in the General Assembly, certain taxes are repealed, which undoubtedly benefit the mass, and the next session it is proposed to undo all that hns been done before. These taxes are to be reimposed on the classes already suffering • from want of remunerative employment. It' the Go^ verninent want more taxes, let them tax , those who have already made their j money out of the people, and not those who have to' make it; or let them find the labourers employment to pay these taxes, and not- keep up a system that renders it almost impossible for ! laboring men to pay money. Our legislators evidently believe, " God helps those that help themselves," although they were put into the Assembly to look after any other interest but their own, and as our rulers set the example, they need not be surprised if the people follow it. The last election proves that the people have the power if they choose. Notwithstanding all the power, money* and influence brought to bear against Liberalism, every, member got his seat on the Libefi! ticket; bub now they are in, where are their Liberal views ? Instead of decreasing taxation on those already overburdened, they are putting more on, notwithstanding our County Chairman and Mayor are down South petitioning Government for money to carry on works here, and enable the people to pay local taxes. If the people can afford the re-imposition of these taxes, how is it our local governing bodies are so heavily in debt ? Why don't they raise more for themselves for our own wants ? It is near time the people took a leaf out of the General Government's book, and look after themselves.—Tours, &c, __ " : - . P.B.P.
