A man named Lawrence attempted to commit suicide to-day. It appears lie and his wife quarrelled, whereupon he took 3 bottles containing a lotion, which were marked poison and swallowed the contents of one bottle. A doctor was called, aud he sajs Lawrence is out of danger. A Kuniara miner named George Bird was killed at Brash Cope Terrace, Westbrook, by a tunnel collapsing. At an inquest to-day a rerdiet of "Accidental death " was returned.
Gilbert Stewart's Jocal sweep of £2000 on the Melbourne Cup was fully filled up in this district alone, and drawn at full amount.
