WELLINGTON.
Last night. A deputation from the Licensed "Victuallers Conference waited on the Premier to-day, potting forth several suggestions regarding the Licensing Bill now before Parliament, and urging the desirabillitj of consolidating all existing provincial ordinances into one compact Act. The Premier replied that Government intended to give tho matter their earnest consideration during the recess, with a view of introducing a comprehensive measure next session, and thanked the deputation for suggestions.*■ which would be useful in preparing i new BUI.
Should favorable weather continue, the operations connected with the repairing of the Cook's strait cable will be completed to-morrow evening. It is officially notified that J. Saundcrs' contract for £66,695, for the.first section of the West Coast Bail way, has been accepted. This will tend to alleviate the distress at present prevalent in the City.
An Italian, while driving orer the" railway crossing yesterday, had a narrow escape from being killed. The engine struck the cart before it was clear of tho rails, turning it completely over, and throwing it over the cattle- stop.
