The Tire in Porter's store last night broke nut spontaneously amongst the straw stored in a collar. The do mage was merely nominal, and was occasioned more by water than by fire. Tho dense smoke greatly retarded the efforts of those who sought to quench the lire and several men had to be carried away in a state of insensibility.
At the annual meeting of Sfc. James' Mutual Improvement Association last night, a rule was sought to be inserted in the codo providing that the necessary qualification for membership should be belief in an inspirated Bible. This was rejected by a large majority, although backed up by the authority of the Church. It was also decided to prohibit religious discussions.
Dempsey, the contractor, failed to pay the remainder of his men to-day, and lliey accordingly presented a petition to the Eesident Engineer, who forwarded it to the dapartment at Wellington. A telegram has been sent to Mr S.vanpon asking him to bring tho matter before th • House, also the question of the Newmarket contract. Dempsey is taking on fresh hands.
