AUCKLAND.

Last night. Mr Euwt's Boply. Mr Hurst sent the following reply to the resolution carried by the meeting of his constituents:—"The result prore the wisdom of the step taken by me. The no-confidence motion having been, withdrawn the deadlock has ceased, and the House last night dispatched more beneficial business than during the whole month we have been in session at such an enormous cost to to country—something like thirty pounds an hour. Sir George Grey having voluntarily abandoned the leadership of his party and declined to form part of any new Administration, I was of opinion that no staple Government could be constructed. The Hall party satisfied me' of their intention to pass Liberal measures, to do justice to Auckland, and therefore for these and other reasons impossible to communicate I conctire I was justified in securing these important interests and the welfare of the colony by adopting the course I panned. I feel certain that •rents will fully justify my conduct. No one will surely doubt that on all matters affecting Auckland I will be found roting with the majority of our members, unless, indeed, the threat made bj some of them be put in execution: to vote against all Auckland grants and bills, in which case I believe strangers will reader us that service denied by oar own members. I must most respectfully decline to be influenced to resign by a meeting which may or may not be composed of electors while in ignorance of material facts, and without affording their representative an opportunity of being heard and explaining hit conduct.—(Signed) W. J. Hurst."
