CHESTNUTS AND CHANCES.
A rat of a boy. who bad ib rain searched the post office corridor* for the nickel which a. careless hand occasional iy drops at the stamp clerk's window, took his position before a chest* nut stand and eyed the fresh nuts a long. time before drawing * deep sigh' and groauiog: " Oh, I wish 1 was rich." The chestnut roaster made no reply, and the odour of the roasting nuts finally induced the boy to enquire: " Are chestnuts healthful?" " Sio hub—they are prolific of indigestion," was the reply.--^. After a while the boy thought it was time ' to remark " Did you ever hear the itory of the man who gape a poor boy a handful of chestnuts, and when the boy grew up rich he rewarded the old nun with a diamond pin and a four-horsa team?"" '• No, I never did, but I heard of a man who brought a poor boy to the edge of the grave by giving him a doxen cliesfcnuts." The lad took a turn up and down, secured another whiff of the beautiful odour, and then leaned over and whispered: '* If I take the chance on the edge of the gr^ve business, will you taka the chance on the chestnuts." Xh« vendor finally thought that he would.
