Ec the Minister of Marine case the Government's reply to the petitioners was that the law does not justify de Handing any explanation from the Grand Jury as to their action. They have, however, sent for the depositions at the Magistrate's Court.
The rowing season was opened by a procession of boats. It was headed by the Naval Brigade pinnace, followed by ten boats of the Auckland Bowing Club. Then cams six belonging to the Pousonby llowing Club, and three from the North Shore Club. A large number of private boats also took part in the procession, taking up a position in rear of the Clubs' boats.
Another Fire, Heightou's blacksmith shop was burnt down this evening. The font part of the premises was used as a carpenter's shop. The men knocked off work at 2 o'clock, and the fire broke oat at 5 o'clock. The place was completely gutted. Sunday night.
The insurances on Hdghton's premises burnt down are in the Colonial £130 on the goods, and on the tools £4D. In the case of Hauraki Manning brought up on remand at Dargaviile on a charge of giving Talue!e»3 cheques with intent to defraud. The prosecution failed to establish any felonious intent, and the case was disunited.
