CHRISTCHURCH.

Last night,

The longest train ever despatched from Lytteiton came through yesterday, viz., eighty loaded trucks drawn by two locomotives. Two hundred and four loaded trucks were left at Lyttelton during the day, equal to 1120 tons of goods. Mr Hassell's funeral yesterday was attended by the greater part of the leading business people, aud the Christchurch merchants' offices were all closed during the afternoon. The 31st of the present month is the last day for receiving entries for the Cbristchurch Metropolitan Show.

So little interest seems to be taken in next New Year's regatta atLyttelton that, at a meeting of the Committee yesterday, notice of motion was given to abandon the affair altogether. A large number of persons went to Lyttelton yesterday to inspect the steamer Jtotomahana.

Mr ltichard Perham, an old and respected resident of Oxford died very suddenly this evening. The deceased gentlemtm who had resigned his seat on the Local Road Board, had come down to vote at the election of hia successor, and after recording his vote, he was in the act of stepping into his buggy when he gave a heavy sigh, fell back and expired immediately. He had been suffering from heart disease for some time.

Death through Cold Weather. ■ An inquest was held on the bodj of Samuel Saunders Baldwin, who was found insensible in a paddock at Heathcote Valley on Tuesday morning, and who died the same night. D. Craig, New Zealand Insurance Company's manager said Baldwin was originally a respectable young fellow who came out with letters authorising Craig to pay him a pound a week for twenty weeks, but he gave way to drinking habits. The evidence showed that he had been employed at the Grosvenor hotel, but that he fell into such a state through drinking, that the landlord dismissed him. He gave him another chance, and Baldwin .abstained from drink for a week, but then he relapsed, upon which he wa9 told on Monday that he would have to go. He took some music which belonged to him, and evidently wandered about on Monday night, which was bitterly cold, till he succumbed to the weather. The medical evidence showed the lungs were in a terrible state of disease, which made him an easy prey, and that he was sober at the the time of his befog found. The Jury returned a verdict of •• Died from congestion of the lungs," the reiult of exposure to cold. The Markets.
