At the Criminal sessions to-day before Judge Williams, Matthew William Hawkins (48), who yesterday pleaded guilty to two indictments charging him with embezzlement was brought up for sentence. The prisoner had nothing to say why sentence should not be passed upon him; there were two indictments, and the prisoner was sentenced to six years penal servitude on each of these; sentences to run concurrently.

A true Sill against Smith. The Grand Jury returned a true bill in the case of James Smith, charged with the murder of his wife.

At the Supreme Court to-day a true bill was found against Jas. Smith for wife murder. Matthew Wra. Hawkins for embezzlement« was sentenced to six years. Alexander Eodard, for cattle stealing, was acquitted. The case against Thos. Chalmers Eeid, for embezzlement, is now proceeding. Thos. Chalmers Eeid was charged upon an indictment containing lix counts with baring fraudulently and unlawfully applied certain monies, amounting to £14M 7s 6d, the-property of the Colonial Building and Investment Society (Limited), to his own use, or the use of hii brother (J. C. Eeid). Several counts were placed on the indictment so as to charge him separately with dealing with funds as alleged, either as a director or a shareholder, and with appropriating money unlawfully to his own use, or to use of some other persons, other than for the purpose of the company. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. The case was not concluded when the Court roie.
