NELSON.
Last night. The enquiry into the wreck of the Messenger is still proceeding. Some of the purchasers of the wreck, together with a number of men proceeded to the Sandspit last week, and hare just returned. It is rumored that the wreck is sunk, and nothing whatever can be saved.
For several nights lately severe frosts, with ice in the morning, have been experienced, and all the early crops, such as potatoes, have been cut off. The fruit crop, it is feared, will be a failure, especially apricots, peaches, and others which blossom early.
A fatal accident has occurred near Stoke. Mr Jelly man, an old settler, 70 years of age, was being driven to his farm in the neighboring valley when in backing, the horse became restive, and horse and cart went over the bank, Mr Jeliyman hitting his head. Death was instantaneous.
