The most ardent of the supporters of I Sir George Grey's Ministry are quite | prepared to admit that the present I Government hare nlnde mistakes. One of their great mistakes was their trying to get in the thin end of the frde'^trade wedge by abolishing the protection on timber and other articles, but especially "•ou.lliH former. . By careful nurturing and the adoption of a close protection
policy regnrding it, the timber trade of tho colony had begun to put forth signs of becoming a flourishing industry, when by the action of tho Government in removing tho foreign timber duty, the industry has become seriously crippled, and in consequence many mills have had to suspend operations. We uro glad to see that the question has been broached in the House by Mr Murray, and though the Premier has returned a somewhat indefinite answer we believe he will be quite prepared to acknowledge the mistake made, and if possible remedy it.
