The first important eyents of the racing season were commenced to-day, and were a great success. The racing was first-class, the only drawback being the unsettled state of the weather. Gibson's Maori Boy 3. Lonehand had the race all his own way, and won eventually in a canter. This was his first appearance on the ITew Zealand turf. Handicap Hubdle Race, 70 sots, 2 miles-O'Brien's Black Prince 1, E. Pay's Lonehand (Australian) 2, P. Butler's Te Wheta 3. Two others started.
