Last night.
The preliminary enquiry as to the wreck of tho Messenger, commenced before the Collector of Customs, will be continued to morrow. The public official inquiry will take place early. The cause of the wreck, as given by the crew, is that of tho. wind shifting. She missed stays, and in trying to wear ship till the anchor was let go and swing, she went aground, bumping heavily. The crew left in two boats, and pulled round the Spit, and landed at the lighthouse. Next day the main-top and top gallant masts and mizen-tops had gone, and the back of the ship was broken. The vessel was American built, 27 years old, and is insured for £3C30.
