Sailed : Schooner Caledonia for Tonga and Samoa, and schooner Onward for Mercury Bay, where she loads timber for Napier. The barque Glimpse for Kuipara loads timber for Timaru.

Auriferous quartz is stated to have been found near Cambridge. O. M. Creagh started for Cambridge with twenty men on a survey expedition. If successful a road will be made to Botorua shortening the distance to the Hot Spring by one-half.

McCuliough, the Major of tho Thames, announces in the Auckland papers to-day his candidature for the vacant seat at the Thames. He nays, "I have long supported the Liberal policy introduced by the Premier, and if elected will be prepared to aid In every way towards having these measures carried through the House, and others to be introduced by Grey in developing the Liberal policy."

Sherdon Carlylo Hall, an Enflish solicitor, travelling for the benefit of his health, was arrested at th« Albeit Hotel on an alleged charge of obtaining board and lodging amounting Co £40 on false pretences, and with altering a "telegram with alleged intent to defraud. There was also, at the same place arrested, Graham Sonberry, charged with larceny, as a bailee, of £12. There have been important finds at the New Golden Pah, Coromandel, once the famous Union Beach.
