September 18. Lowe and Bray, the Lancefield Bank robbers, were sentenced, >tho former to five years—the first in irons—and the latter to three years. He asserted that, bo was led into the affair by Lowe, but the judge declined to believe him. The steamer Little Eastern, which started for Sydney, stranded at Waratah. The mare Briseis, winner of the Melbourne Cap, Derby and Oaks, broke her back, and was killed. At the trial of Lawrence for the murder of Fiulayson, the plea of insanity was set tip, Several members of Finlayson's family gave evidence to acts of insanity by the prisoner, and showed* insanity in the family. A prosecution has been commenced against the Daily Telegraph for publishing a newspaper not properly registered by act of Parliament. The wife of Geo. Eobertson, the wellknow publisher, died suddenly. In anticipation of the visit of the Prince of Wales to the Colonies, the Minister of Eailways is having a special built; for the use of his lloyal Highness. It is to fee constructed entirely of colonial material. The brig Shannon collided with the schooner Gauntlet in the Yarra. The latter was sunk.

panics as&ed the Col- Secretary that in lieu of stamp duties upon Insurance i iolieies, the imposition of aa aunual license fee calculated by a percentage on the nominal capital of the company might he imposed. This would realise about £15,000 yearly. Mr Berry approved of the suggestion.
