WELLINGTON.

(Per Pbiss Asenct.)

This day

Pilot Holmes boarded the ship Matilda last night and brought her into the harbor this morning. It is understood that the Triennial Parliaments is not to come into operation until the expiration of the present Parliament. The first balance-sheet of tlie Wellington Tramway Company is issued. It shows that £9018 was received for fares during the last twelve months, while the current expenses, including renewals, maintenance, etc., for the same period amount to £8314. The item V interest" is £1945.

Later. The ship Matilda had to slip her anchor this morning before coming in, leaving ninety fathoms of chain behind her. The Government have accepted a tender of £2590 to build the new powder magazine at Kawara to be commenced at once!

Col. Pearce absolutely declines to allow himself to bo nominated for the Mayoralty. The captain of the Matilda says the vessel was not in any danger whilo at the heads.

A sharp shock of earthquake was felt at Bealey at four this morning. The Oppositon members held a caucus this morning but nothing of auy consoquence was done.

Wellington, Last night.

The members are only slowly gathering here, and as yet there is little news and as little excitement. It is considered probable that Mr Hall will more a rote of want of confidence in the Government a? at present constituted, and it is even said that Ballance is behind the scenes, and is trying to induce Montgomery or some one else to take the same step so as to resuscitate the middle party, but both these statements lack authenticity. The fact is that both sides will have to count heads very carefully before taking any precipitate steps; but my individual opinion is that the Government have a majority from four to eight. Many people also are sure the session will be for some time occupied in squabbling, and that there is every indication of it being cut out for it forthwith.
