Diptheria is becoming more preralent in surrounding districts of Christohurch. Sereral serious cases bare broken out at Horarata.

The E.M. yesterday announced that a Commission was about to sit in Wellington on points in connection with Court procedure, fees, etc. Consideration he believed would be giren to suggestions from legal gentlemen.

Twenty-seren applications were received tor the position of House Steward to clie Hospital. They hare been referred to a committee. After considerable discussion at yesterday's meeting of the Hospital Board, the question of the appointment of a Eesident Surgeon was postponed till another meeting the members will decide as to whether the salary will be fire or seren hundred pounds per annum.

Through leaning against the moveable iron bar on the platform of the smoking carriage a young man yesterday in the South express train ran a narro escape. The bar slipped out of the socket, and he fell between the carriages. Fortunately he had a firm hold of the iron staunchion and was able to pull himself up quickly.

The 2nd Volume of the New Zealand Stud Book is now in course of preparation, and already about 170 new entries have been received, comprising about 50 draught entires and 120 mares.
