September 17.

TOLTJNTEEB MOVEMENT.

A meeting of the Volunteers was held at Bayas' Hotel on Saturday evening last. Over eighty members being present. Mr J. H. Harrison occupied the chair. The Secretary read the list of nominations received as follows :—Captain, Mr J. B. Gatland ; Lieutenant, J. H. Harrison, C. Gale; Sub Lieutenant, J. H. Harrison, 0. Gale. There being only one nomination for the Captaincy, the Chairman declared Mr J. Brown Gatland elected. The statement was received with cheers. For the Lieutenancy, Mr J. H. Harrison retired in favor of Mr Gale, who was therefore declared elected for that position, Mr Harrison taking the'Sub-Lieutenancy. The following gentlemen were then elected Sergeants : — Coiour-Sergeant—William Brentnall; Sergeants—Ptrtriek Hayes, John Higginson, John Marshall. Corporals—Edward Healey, Jqmes Meredith, A. MoNeill, James ityeroft, A. Kelso. Mr George Beeson was elected Secretary. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed, and the announcement that 120 had given in their names as joining members was received with loud cheers.

The company is to be congratulated on the judicious choice made of officers, the 1 whole three having held To!unteer commissions, and most; of the Sergeants have hlso seen active service. Hospital Committee. At a meeting held on Monday evening tlte following resolution was unanimously carried:—"That a Committee consisting of Messrs Hall, Gilmour, Luks, and McDonald be appointed a deputation to wait upon the County Council, and urge upon them the desirability of taking over the Coromandel Hospital with a view of its support, and that in the event of its being refused the Hospital be closed. School Committee. Messrs Fraser and King were elected to the Committee, vice Woodward and Colebrook resigned. A hearty rote of thanks was passed to Mr Woodward for the interest he had always taken in school affairs. I
