Last night
The body of a child, apparently stillborn, was found yesterday in the Avon, opposite the cemetery. The body was in a sugar bag, which was filled with stones and made to sink.
A man named Jno. Cunningham was arrested oa Saturday at Lytlelton, on suspicicn from a striking resemblance to Martin Cunningham, the murderer of Hugh Hanna at Lake Ohau on November, 1875. On being brought to Christchurch he was examined, and on enquiries being made, it was found his representations were not correct. He is well known in the If urunui diatrict, and was released at once!
The new clock at Government Buildings was set going on Saturday night. From the height of the tower and the loud tones it can be heard striking at the farthest corner of the city belt.
The new Palace Railway Company's north line was on Saturday crowded with passengers by each train.
The New Zealand Gas Company have declared a dividend of 10 per cent, for the year, ending August 31st.
The Suez mail will be brought on with* out stopping, from the Bluff to-morrow, for the first time.
