WELLINGTON.

Last night.

A writ has been served at the suit of Mr Clark, C.E., against the proprietors of tbe Evening Chronicle, claiming £1000 damages for alleged false and malicious statements made during the last Mayoral contest. '[ The first publication of the NewZealand Punch appeared this morning, and is a very creditable production, both in matter and typography. The Times this morning publishes the following telegram, which, it states, was sent by Col. Whitmore to Mr Ingles of i Kaikoura, and; through being wrongly delivered, found its way for publication in the Evening Herald, Ashburton Yf-" Will you contest Cheviot with Saunders on the platform of the Governor's speech; pur party will gire you all the support we can, j and, if you consent, yonr claim for consideration shall receive attention whether you are successful or not.— (Signed) Whitmobb.'' The following official correspondence has passed on the subject:—" Hon Col. Whitmoro>-I beg to call your attention to aparagraph which appears in the Times of this morning respecting the wrong delivery of a telegram addressed by you to Kaikoura. May I request you to be good enough to inform me of the date of your, message to enable me to ■ trace the error.—(Signed) A. T» ftMiaiNKiTYy Assistant Secret tary to the Telegraph Department." "Mr Maginnity—My messtga was sent about the 19th of August, and I would be obliged if you would is*

certain if the one published purporting to be a copy is correct, especially the* last pnragraph.—Whxtjioke." " Hon. Col. Whitmore— I have traced the telegram sent by you to Mr H. Ingles, Saikoura, on the 19th ult, and on comparing the paragraph which appeared to-day in the New Zealand Times I find that it ii not a copy. It appears to be written from memory, and 'materially alters the sense, especially the last portion.—Maginnitt.
