THE MAORI OUTRAGE.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—l only landed this morning from Auckland about three a.m., when I was informed* that natives bad fired upon a survey party. Now, sir, I think that the natives of this or any other district of New Zealand are that, far advanced to know "better than to shoot at a pakeha. They know quite well they have a Government to protect their interests, and at a great expense to our people. Only a few day! ago a nian only supposed ,%to be pig shooting was fired at andi t brought to jastice and,fined £5, Nothing about thei murderous intent of the nitives. I ask is this right or is this going to be a repetition of the same.old j^ftie bvrir. agaiii | nothing s^aid ; it don't Soit electors when they have erected a polling feopth for the niggers at Shortland because this would perhaps interfere with! the Maori vote for certain- parties.; Never Jmn{l_ all. j;bis, but look, again to what has happened to this survey party. Why, 'you may ; as well consider th«3e; four or five men dead, for their intentions Wjere murderous. But for a kind Provi-;

dence,, who was good'enough to spare these,poor fellow creatures. But it does hot screen those rascals from murder. I say that the Government in only making a farce of volunteering in not ordering our volunteers; away at 12 o'clock last night. Where was their judgment when they partly refused to hare any thing to do with our Thames Cavalry. Would not our Thames; Cavalry have been into the interior 1 of the country, and a telegram sent round by Hamilton to the corps of the Waikato to meet them half way, so as to stop these ruffians from getting into the Xing Country as all other murderers have done before.—l am, Sir, p: J\ C. WILMAMS.
