C. O'Neill, C.E., has consented to stand for the Wellington Country districts on the Liheral ticket.
The first annual report of the West Wanganui coal mine is to be presented to the annual meeting to-morrow. It states' that all operations at the mine hare been stopped. The stoppage is only temporary, and it is thought that as soon as the moneUtj; crisis is passed the mine will again he opened. . A magnificent bust of the celebrated chief Te Hapuka, of Napier, has just
been completed. Tho bust was ordered by the Government, and will cost £200. A rifle match was fired to-day between detaclimehta from the Wellington Artillery and H.M.S. Emerald, and after'au exciting contest, the latter were victorious by oue point, the total scores being: Emerald 387, Artillery 386. The Emerald men fired with MartiniHenri rifles, which gave them an advantage against the Snider carbines used by the Artillery, especially at the longer ranges. ■-.■■■; Arrived: Waitaki, from the South; Wakatipu, from Sydney. She left there on the 16th and had moderate winds on the passage across. The Stella left for Christchurch this afternoon with Sir George Grey, where he commences the electioneering cam* paign. He was accompanied by the Hon J. Fisher. The Hon. J. Hall has resigned his seat in the Legislative Council. Peter Austin and T. L. Murray (of; the Thames), j. Garmons Gibbs (of Oamaru), G.
