A telegram has been received from the Public Works Department, Wellington, instructing Mr Stewart to notify for tenders for the railway work-shops at Newmarket immediately.
At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board a telegram was read From the Government requesting the Board to withdraw the land offered for lease at Tairua to the Union Sash and Door Company until affairs on the goldfield would improve, as otherwise a number of gum-diggers would be thrown out of employment. It was agreed to do so. Mr Firth strongly deprecated the action of the Thames County Council in appealing to the Government instead of the Waste Lands Board as the proper channel. The dwelling house of W. McMillan at Papatoitoi, was burnt down last evening. Mrs McMillan was putting the children to bed, when in pulling down the blind it caught fire from the candle and spread to the ceiling. McMillan was absent from the house, and the wife had only time to save the children before the house was in flames. The building and furniture was insured in the Imperial for £2,000. '"', J. P. Campbell stand for the Waikato in the Liberal interest, also JR. H« Fergusson as an independent candidate.
