yWKLiNGToff, This day. The Hon. Mr Sheohan and the Maori Prisoners. '■'■]>'*\ The Hon. the Native Minister, accompanied by Mr Mackay,. visited .the quarters of the' Maori prisoners,, for the purpose of personally acquainting himself of the arrangements made. As soon as the prisoners recognised Mr Sheehan there were loud cries of "Heremai!" (welcome) uttered. All testified pleasure at seeing him. Enquiries were made by the Minister if attention was paid to their wants, to which all replied, under the circumstance- they' were satisfactorily treated. The natives were anxious to know when they would be tried, and by what court. .Mr Sheehan explained the position, also his satisfaction at their orderly conduct, which would be acknowledged at the trial. He said one ploughing party was sufficient for the purpose stated by them to test their claim to the land, and justice would be done them. The Government was determined to -end •the cause of dissatisfaction; but the Natives themselves were to blame for their present position.
