By the outward mail to-day, the Harbor Board sent Home full instructions to Mr Gaibraith Denny Darling, to arrange for the purchase of a twin screw hopper dredge to work in the Olago Harbor. She must be qualified to work and dredge in a depth from 8 feet to 30 feet, to lift on an avernge not less than 350 tons of free soil an hour, and to steam when loaded eight knots an hour. Alternative tenders will be asked for one with a carrying capacity of 750 tons, and one of 900 tons. Ihe sum of 500 guineas is placed at the disposal of the commissioners. At the City Police Court tin's morning, t-S? 8 ,MeMrs filliott and Malleson J.P. s, Matthew Hawkins, an accountant, was charged on the information of Jas. Stephen .Reeves for, that being a clerk or servant under the Building Society, registered under the Building and Land Society's Act of 1866, called the Union Permanent Building Society, he did, on or about the 31st day of November, 1877, and other divers days since that day, fraudulently embezzle certain sums of money, to wit, the sums of £352, £100, and £150, delivered and- received and taken into account by him for, and in the name of, the said Society. Mr Macassey conducted the prosecution, and prisoner wag not defended. Some time yesterdey,
the accused, whose mind was evidently very, much agitated, went to Mr Nation, solicitor to the company, and made a clean breast of the matter. In his possession was a packet of strychnine, showing that, for some time past, he had contemplated self-destruction. Some evidence was taken, and accused remanded for a week, bail being refused. L. Bacon, bootmaker, will oppose Driver and Simpson for Kpslyn. It is not at all likely that either Driver or Turnbull will stand for Dunedin city.
