NEW PLYMOUTH.
Last night.
A serious accident occurred this morning at the Sugar Loaves. About half past eleven while the men employed by the Harbor Board were engaged in ship» ping the face of the cliff at the worka, an immense slip of earth occurred, burying four men. The men, were opening a quarry opposite the Fishing rock,, and the earth being loose, the foreman thought it advisable to loosen the top, and sent some of his men to do it; whilst so employed the soil gave way. and four men below who were engaged in wheeling the loose stuff from the spot were buried. Wm. Hawker had hfs leg smashed above the ankle, Wm. Crook's ankle was dislocated, and Patrick Ryan and Hume were severely crushed by the fall of earth, but had no bones broken, and after they were dug out were able to stand. On examination by Dr O'Carrol, the injuries sustained were ascertained not to, be so serious as was at first expected, and the men were then conveyed into toWh in carts.
Mr Moorhouse has been solicited to stand for New Plymouth but has declined, as he intended to contest Christchurch. . '
