NEW PLYMOUTH.

Last night. Escape of Prisoners from New

Plymouth Gaol.

Clever Re-capture,

About seven o'clock this morning two prisoners escaped from the New Plymouth gaol. The men that escaped were Hall, a prisoner transferred from Dunedin to New Plymouth, undergoing a sentence of 10 years, and a natire prisoner named Hinoki, only recently convicted here for horse stealing and sentenced to 12 months. The prisoner Hall rushed past the gaoler and bolted out of the prison, quickly followed by Hinoki. The gaoler at once pursued, and whilst pursuing Hinoki he called out to Mr Martin, who lives near the gaol, to follow Hall and not to lose sight of him. The native was cleverly captured before he reached the outside of the prison. Mr Martin followed Hall, and kept him in view until he reached Woodley stream, when Hall dashed into the scrub and was lost to sight. Mr Martin was joined by one of the Constabulary and they made a search for the prisoner. After searching the scrub a short time without success, the constable went into the stream and followed its course some little distance when he espied the head of the prisoner above water, the remainder of his body being submerged. The constable made a cautious approach, and succeeded in capturing Hall. The whole of the affair did not Occupy an hour from the time the prisoners escaped until .Hall was recaptured. From particulars learned' siuoe it is ascertained that the prisoners' intentions were to have made for Parihaka and sought protection of Te Whiti. Extra protection is kept over the prisoners, owing to the conversation heard amongst them that if they escape Te Whiti would protect theot the same as Hiroki. . i
