PATEA.

This day. Atkinson Electioneering.

Major Atkinson held a very successful meeting at Carlyle last night, over two hundred electors being present. Sherwood's supporters mustered in force, in order to give the Major as much annoyance as possible; but Atkinson was 9 very successful. He condemned the action of the Grey Government in strong language, and he more especially condemned the Native administration. His speech occupied two hours, at the end of which a vote of confidence was proposed, but Sherwood's supporters brought down an amendment that it be only a vote of thanks. The voting was even. This being Sherwood's stronghold, it is not thought probable he will be returned.
