Tuesday. Sailed: Ladybird for South. Mr Hobbs divided £100 of his honorarium among .the following charities :— Parnell Orphan Home £25; St. Mary's Home, £25; Children's Home, £25; Ladies' Benevolent Society, £25. Mr Tole is said to be contemplating a somewhat similar step.
The brigantine Meg Merrilies has ar> rived. She reports the massacre of a boat's crew from the Auckland schooner Agnes Donald, at Pentecost Island. The Agnes Donald returned to Lernka from a labor cruise on the 2nd iutt., and the Captain reported that when at Pentecosti Island a boat's crew landed, and were attacked on the beach by natives. The crew of the boat were under the charge of the mate, a jonng man named George
Simpson, well known in Auckland from whence he came. He fired his revolver and wounded one of his assailants. He was struck on the head and killed on the beach. Three natires, who composed the crew, were literally hacked to pieces. A lad escaped. Simpson has a wife and infant in Auckland.

An old identify named Thomas Weston, auctioneer, died to-day ; he has been a resident since 1840.
Patrick O'Brien and George Head, two boys scarcely ten years old, were charged with breaking and eutering a dwelling, and stealing therefrom. Sub-Inspector Pardy stated the prisoners atole a work* box from the house, having pawned it spent the money for beer and became drunk. They were remanded as the Magistrate was puzzled what to do with them;
Captain Murphy, of the Minister of Marine, and Bobert Eobertson were charged with a series of acts of cruelty to Alfred Cale, A.B. Theo. Cooper appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Tyler for the Captain. All day long the Court and approaches were blocked by the public. The evidence of Cale lasted the whole day. Nearly all the crew are witnessed. The case was remanded, the counsel for the defence requesting time to arrange for a cross examination of Cale.
At the inquest on Thomas Snowden, of Tauranga, who died suddenly, a verdict of apoplexy was returned.
The Collector of Customs refused to allow importers a reduction for cash discounts in London. Mr G. T. Chapman protested, and the Commissioner has refunded the overcharge. The matter had been previously before the Chamber of Commerce.
Mr Roche is out for Waipa; J. S. Macfarlane for Waitemata; and J. Shepherd of Albertland is mentioned for Rodney making four candidates for that seat.

Joseph Newman met the. Eden con* stituents at Newmarket tonight. He stated he would not pledge himself to support Grey, but would act as an independent member. He received a vote of thanks.
