When the Maori prisoners werje committed to-day, Dr Buller applied that' bail be allowed. The Magistrate fixed it at one thousand pounds, and two sureties each of £500. Dr Buller contended against such excessive bail, but the Magistrate said for European's placed in the same position, he would not have demanded more than fifty pounds each, but he looked at the Maoris in &

Pearce, formerly a captain in the Wellington Artillery, but more recently major in the Wellington volunteers, has been elected by the various volunteer bodies throughout New Zealand as their Colonel, and the appointment has, been confirmed. Capt. Pearce is on his way out from home, and is expected "here in a few weeks. The Opposition Programme, i A large meeting of the members of tb,e Opposition was held to-day. The proceedings were considered privately, but it is understood the greatest unanimity prevailed, especially amongst the so-called "rats." ' < The course of action decided on will however only be made known in Parliament. It is reported amongst Ministerial Supporters that the Opposition will agree to a Loan Bill being passed and three months supply, and new writs issued and made returnable as soon as possible. Also that the Opposition intend raising a fund of twenty thousand pounds for the purpose of contesting the elections against Greyites.
