HAWERA.
This day. Last Sunday a Constabulary man named Jekeyell deserted from Waihi in stealing a settler's horse and saddle with the intention of going to Parihaka, but he was arrested on Monday morning at Opunake by means of telegraph. The Maoris are still on the other side of the river, making a pah and fencing in land.
