WELLINGTON.

Last night.

The Railway Map.

What the' Chronicle Says about it.

The Catholic Education Petition. The Chronicle to-night says on the subject of the Thames Railway, " It will be remembered a Committee was, on the motion of the Hon Mr Hichardson, appointed to enquire into the alleged tampering with the map on which the line as sanctioned by the House was laid down. That Committee is now calling evidence on oath. The Opposition state that this evidence clearly proves t that 30 miles were added on to the railway at the instigation of the Premier, and further that the added 30 miles have been marked on the map by a hand totally different from that which originally drew the map. It is further stated that the addition is plainly perceptible even to a man who is not an expert by holding the map up to the light. The report of the Committee will be brought up to-morrow afternoon, when we sincerely hope that these rumours will turn out to be foul calumnies against Sir George Grey." To-morrow Mr J.- C. Brown will more " That the petition of the Koman Catholics of New Zealand ou;the subject of, 'education, and the report of the Public Petitions Committee thereon be referred

to a select committee with power to call for persons and papers and to take evidence and to report within fifteen days." The Opposition state they can count on 49 votes, while the Government only 36. ' The only importance of the statement is to test tne truthfulness of the •Govern, ment whips when the division is known. Later. The, report of. the Committee, re the, Gahamstown Kailway map alteration, has been brought up. It states the extension to Te. Aroha, marked, on, the map, was authorised by Mr Macandrew. It cautions the heads of departments who certify to the correctness of maps. It elicited that the alteration was made previous to September. The division will be taken between 3 and 4 this afternoon; ■■'■'!
