Sydney International Ezhibition, 1879.
The following letter was receired! by the Local Cooimifcteo this morning, and as it should be of interest in this commujiity we publish it for general information ;—• " Sydney, 4tUJune fJ^7o, ■ ;." Sir,—l have the honor to* inform you .that there will be shown 4n t pperatiou at the Exhibition machinery and a method; on a working scale for extracting precious metals, not only from untreated tailings, but also from those which hare been treated by the ordinary-processes, and in which a notable percentage of gold and silver has been left. There Js. eVery reason to believe that the machinery and method referred to will save at least 50 or 60 par cent of the gold left in* tailings, which have been through the. grinding operation of machines such' as Wheeler's and Berdan's pans, or of Arastra's. The process is a cheap one, and does not necessitate the use of smelting 6r fever; berating furnaces, and it ought greatly to increase the production of gold in New Zealand. I have been applied to by the inventors to ask the New Zealand Commission and, through it; private persons to forward samples of not less than one cwt. each for treatment at the Exhibition. These samples are most sought after, from which, in practice, it has been found most difficult to extract the gold. The operations will be conducted under" the supervision of officers of the .Commission, and careful analysis of the tailings will bo made in all stages. There will be no chargo, but it is proposed that
the gold extracted should be repaired by the owner of the exhibited machinery. It has been explained i > me 1 'tat ai different snmples of tilings may reqnire iv some respects different, although equally inexpensive treatment, that 2Olbs. of cacb.. whether previously treated or untreated, tailings containing payable quantities of gold should be forwarded beforehand, so that en analysis of each may bo made before the Exhibition opens. " If these samples are sent to me I will have them forwarded. "I have, etc., ' •■•■■ /" AtTGUSTIJB MOBBIB, "Secretary. "■ Dr Hector, C.M.G., _ . r " Wellington, N.Z."
