THE NEW GREEK COSTUME.

The m voßified Greek costume invented by Mrs Pfeiffer has lately been introduced to the public through the columns of The Queen. That it is a simple and pretty dress wil^be^ acknowledged by many, but whether it^will come to be adopted at all generally is^s, yet too soon to judge. .It is peculwr^tjo a certain extent, although, as Mrs^|eiffer justly says, ".less remarkable than!f f the majority of so-called art dres«es^ jiut still its very (simplicity is apt to it unpopular, as for «o many years, an4i?speoially at the present time, " trimmpw " are, carried to an absurd extent.sva:ln proposing the adoption of this c&stume, Mrs Pfeiffer wishes^ to

meet Jttie v wants; of that portion of her-i countrywomen whose time is engaged in serious occupation, and to whom tH# ever changing fashions are irk■ome airja, annoying. The costume consists of "parts—the principal a dress rery lffieHne "Princess," but ungored. The sleeves close-fitting and, long, the ■kirt f»l^Jg .gracefully to the ground, is confined^ -the waist by a band. There ; is no trimming except some simple braidIng wb jch/fofliows' the outlines of the dress. This dressis complete in itself, and can be worn alone. It has the advantage of being becoming to all figures. It takes only eight or nine yards of material and a very smalkportion of;the time and skill requisfte";in the making of an ordinary dress.« T-he outer part of the costume consists of a pallium or shawl draped according to ;tfte_' taste or fancy of .the wearer. It can^b"e i'!fastened iat eacii shoulder, crossed'over the, chest,, and allowed to fall at the back almost the length of the skirt, ,and,.,.in front is slightly, caught up and cr6ssM again. This pallium mustbe of soft material, Chuddah shawls, China crape,,, foulard, and cashmere are all suitable for it. ' Tins arrangement of the pallium is^aeknowledged by Mrs Pfeiffer, to requiro some amount of taste, and as it has been said that no English woman knows how to put on a shawl, this part of the costume may not prove so artistic as expected:-
